I am very concerned about bicycle and pedestrian safety on Route 1 between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. The past few years have seen a slew of critical and fatal bicycle crashes along this corridor and state crash statistics clearly confirm that this is the most dangerous road for bicycles in the state. This is a health issue for residents, tourists and especially seasonal workers. Therefore I am asking that the State Legislature direct DelDOT to address the issues of bicycle and pedestrian safety along the corridor.
 
There is a clear need for improvements to bicycle and pedestrian accommodations on Route 1 consider that:
• last summer the bicycle count at the intersection of Routes 1 and 1A exceeded 100 cyclists per hour (both directions)
• at least 7 major bicycle and pedestrian crashes occurred in 2005 resulting in 1 fatality and 3 critical injuries
• shoulders have been eliminated or are shared with buses and
• there are no legal pedestrian crossings

Design plans for the third lane project between Dartmouth Road and Route 24 clearly show that DelDOT has no intention to address bicycle and pedestrian safety. Plans call for a rural arterial highway design with cyclists to share the outside lane with buses and turning vehicles at 50mph. There will be no room for pedestrians to travel safely. I suggest that DelDOT go back to the drawing board to redesign it as a complete street. That is designing the road to safely accommodate all users including bicyclists, pedestrians and persons with disabilities.
