Bicycle Coalition To Hold Candlelight Vigil For Bicyclist Killed In Kensington Bike Lane
Tuesday Vigil Will Memorialize Man Killed By Intoxicated Hit-and-Run Driver on Lehigh Ave Last Friday

NOVEMBER 20, 2011. PHILADELPHIA, PA. The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia will hold a candlelight vigil Tuesday for the bicyclist killed by a hit-and-run Friday evening in Kensington.  The vigil will honor the victim, Mr. Gregory Loper, and serve as a reminder of pedestrians' and bicyclists' vulnerability to intoxicated drivers and drivers who choose to hit and run.

The vigil will take place Tuesday, November 22nd, from 5:30 - 6:30 pm, on the corner of E. Lehigh Ave and Jasper Street.  The vigil will include the installation of a ghost bike.  "This is a shame and a tragedy, and our deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Loper's family," said Alex Doty, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition.  "This reminds us that hit-and-runs disproportionately affect pedestrians and bicyclists, and we need better educational efforts and legal protection to reduce the frequency of these awful incidents."

A ghost bike is a bicycle painted white and installed as a memorial to a bicyclist killed or severely injured.  A tradition in bicycling communities in the United States and abroad, ghost bikes also serve to remind passing motorists of the importance of safely sharing the road with bicyclists.

Photo opportunities will be present at the corner of E. Lehigh Ave and Jasper Street from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.
