Commerce Bank Bike Philly is a family-friendly bike tour celebrating the freedom of car-free Philadelphia streets on Sunday, September 14. Bicyclists will green the streets of Philadelphia by using human-powered, zero-emission vehicles to ride 20 miles through historic neighborhoods in Center City and explore hidden corners of Fairmount Park.
Mayor Michael Nutter will welcome riders of all ages and abilities as he enjoys a car-free view of City Hall, the Art Museum, Independence Hall, Columbus Boulevard, Mt Pleasant Mansion and other Philadelphia landmarks.
Two thousand four hundred riders, including over 250 children, participated in the inaugural Commerce Bank Bike Philly in 2007 and were supported by over 200 volunteers. Children 17 and under can ride this year for just $5. Bicyclists of all skill levels are welcome with loops of 10, 20, 35 or 50 miles. The first 10 miles of Commerce Bank Bike Philly are very flat and ideal for those who have never gone on an organized bike ride.
"The best part of the rider was the ability to bring my wife on a scenic traffic-free ride," said Tim Early, of Haverford, PA, who rode Commerce Bank Bike Philly in 2007 with his family. "This was the first time I road with my nine-month-old daughter, and we could not have asked for a better experience."
Commerce Bank Bike Philly is the anchor for Philadelphia's Bicycle Weekend which includes a bike part art show on Friday, the Scenic Schuylkill Century ride from the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia and a Commerce Bank Bike Philly pre-party at North Bowl on Saturday.
Commerce Bank Bike Philly is sponsored by Commerce Bank, Fuji Bicycles, Larabar, zipcar and Temple University Health System.
Proceeds from Commerce Bank Bike Philly benefit the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and will be used to make bicycling better in the Delaware Valley. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Philadelphia, where donations will establish a bicycle education program.
Commerce Bank Bike Philly is presented by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, a non-profit organization making bicycling better through advocacy and education by promoting biking as a healthy, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly form of transportation and recreation in southeast Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.
