Volunteering

We are excited that you are going to helpvolunteers the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia make this a successful and safe event for all riders. Bike Philly is possible because of the 300 + people who volunteer as marshals or help with setup,registration and at our food stops. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the office at 215-242-9253 x7.

Bike Philly is a rain or shine event. Volunteers will be needed to fill their posts regardless of weather.

Perks

Volunteers receive an official T-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and the gratitude of the participating cyclists! 

Types of Assignments

  • Pre-Ride Volunteer Opportunities--office work and site setup 
  • Festival and Rest-stop volunteers --no cycling involved 
  • Marshals--for experienced cyclists; includes riding on the day of the ride 

Captain positions are available for each kind of volunteer opportunity. Captains are in charge of 5-10 volunteers and work closely with BCGP staff and our volunteer coordinators. All volunteers will be required to attend orientation sessions prior to the ride.

Pre-Ride Volunteer Opportunities

The following positions are available prior to the event

  • Packet Pick-up: Assist with rider packet assembly and packet pickup at a designated rider packet pick-up location (e.g. REI). Works with Registration Captain.
  • Promotion: Deliver flyers and registration forms to local bike shops, schools and other organizations.
  • Route Marking & Checking:  Mark the route or check the route, keeping our riders on track and safe.  This is done within two weeks of September 12th.  To sign up as a Bike Philly Route Volunteer, contact our Route Captain, Maggie Gesue at events@bicyclecoalition.org.
  • Loading and unloading on Saturday, September 11.

Event Day Volunteer Positions (Sunday, September 12)

 

Timing

Responsibilities

Setup

5:00-7:30 a.m.

Set up the registration area (including tables, chairs, signs, and food) and/or place signs and refresh markings along the route.

Parking and Traffic Management

5:30-7:30 a.m.

Help with traffic control at the Art Museum until the roads close to ensure that riders arriving in cars park in designated locations.

Registration/Check-In

6:00-8:00 a.m.

Work at the start area to check in pre-registered riders and register those not already signed-up.

Rest Stop Volunteers

7:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 

Assist with rest area setup, greet and assist the riders, help keep the area clean throughout the day, assist with breakdown and truck loading. Shifts vary based on rest-stop location.

Finish Line Festival

5:00 -8:00 a.m. (setup)

8:00 - 11 a.m. (mid-day)

11:00 - 2:00 p.m.

(clean-up)

Help with setup, operation, and cleanup of the finish line festival. Setup, mid-day and clean-up shifts available.

Marshals

7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

 

Marshals are experienced cyclists who maintain the flow of the ride and provide assistance along the route. Good bike repair and people skills are helpful. Marshals may assist with crowd control at the Start, direct riders, assist with bike repair and minor road emergencies and encourage riders along the way. Marshal shifts are up to ~4 hours long.
