This month is our Member Drive, and we’re celebrating by sharing the stories of a few of our 3,000+ members. The following story comes from our member Amarjit from Delaware County. Feel compelled to share your own story? Email our Membership Coordinator, Ashley.

Bicycle Coalition

I spent my childhood in India where biking was the main mode of transportation in my village. I rode to school and everywhere else on my bike. I took biking for granted in my motherland, but when I immigrated to the US, I found myself on buses and trains to get from one point to another. I also found myself gaining weight and I was missing my bike to stay fit. I started taking some classes at a spin studio and later bought my bike from a local bike shop.

I rediscovered that wonderful feeling of freedom that comes with riding a bike. I spent many days learning to ride with clip-on shoes at the Schuylkill River Trail. I did not have fancy clip-on shoes in India! Initially, city roads were a challenge for someone who grew up in a rural village. Schuylkill River Trail served as a bridge for me to get into road cycling.

Then, I joined in some group rides with local cycling and triathlon clubs to meet people and learn the safe backroads. With that experience, I can now ride directly from my home and do long rides in both Delaware and Chester counties without having to drive anywhere!

I first learned of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP) during their annual Bike to Work Day when I worked in University City. I was impressed with the Coalition’s advocacy to build a network of safe streets for cycling, running, and walking. Their work is not just focused in Philadelphia but also in nine neighboring counties. My friend, Ed, serves on the board and invited me to BCGP’s Annual Gala. I learned more about the organization and its many accomplishments including its outreach to underserved youth through the Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling Program. I immediately became a member to support this organization and currently serve as the volunteer chair for Delaware County.

There are certainly many benefits to membership such as discounts for local bikes shops and events. Equally important is the advocacy work, and as membership increases, we can speak with a stronger voice. As we work together, we can improve our infrastructure and help to prevent bicycling tragedies. BCGP needs your help and support as it works to create the safest, best biking, and walking possible!
