The Bicycle Coalition analyzed the 2022 fatality data as reported by the Philadelphia Police Department and it’s not good. The data shows that Philadelphia is on track to have a similarly bad year in 2022 as it did in 2021.  As of October 31, 2022, 102 people have died in traffic crashes.

We compared 2022 (January through October) traffic fatality figures to the same months in 2021, 2020 and 2019. 102 people were killed as of October 31st, which is nearly identical to the same months in 2021, the second highest on record after 2020.  The number of people killed in traffic violence in 2020 was the highest since 1989.

Make up of the 102 persons who lost their lives in 2022 as of October 31st, 2022.

  • 36% were over 50 (39)
  • 5% were under 18 (5)
  • One fourth of all killed were left by drivers who fled the scene (26)
  • 46% were pedestrians (47)
  • 3% were bicyclists (3)

The number of people killed by “hit and run” drivers is higher to date than all of 2021 and is over double the number in 2019.
