Greetings!

It's a "New Day," as Philadelphia's Mayor Nutter likes to say! One of the Bicycle Coalition's major priorities for the new administration was the creation of a new transportation department.  In early January, Mayor Nutter created a new cabinet position of Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities. This is the highest level transportation position that Philadelphia has seen in several administrations.  He appointed Rina Cutler, currently Deputy Administrator at PennDOT and former head of the Parking Authority to that position.  He also re-appointed Clarena Tolson as Commissioner of the Streets Department.  The Bicycle Coalition has requested meetings with both.

It was an amazing sight: bicyclist after bicyclist smiling as they pedaled by, adults, children, parents, couples, bicyclists of all shapes and sizes and ages and dress, on bikes just as vaired.  Each rider had a huge beaming smile as they swept around the front of the Art Museum past my vantage point toward the Ben Franklin Parkway and beyond.   Not a car in sight, it was a bicyclists' nirvana.  Bike Philly 2007, a celebration of car-free bicycling pumped up by Philly inspired music was underway.
