Dear (Contact First Name),
At this year's Annual Meeting on April 6th, 85 members attended and heard from Philadelphia's Deputy Mayor Rina Cutler and Congressman Joe Sestak. Deputy Mayor Cutler spoke about her new job and the challenges being faced by the City's many infrastructure needs. She recognized the need for a bicycling coordinator and pledged to hire one by July 1.
Congressman Sestak spoke about the competing demands on the federal budget and encouraged bicyclists to make themselves heard in Washington.
We are doubling our budget this year and it as a pleasure to honor some of the people who are helping us grow. The Coalition received a donation of $4500 from the SRAM Red Bowl, presented by Brian Hackford of Keswick Cycle and Lee Rogers of Bicycle Therapy, and a $5,000 check from State Representative Babette Josephs to promote bike sharing. SE donated a bike for our raffle.
Alex Doty, Executive Director
PS A year ago, Hans swore he would eat his hat if we had over 1,200 riders at the first Bike Philly. We got 2,400 and our board president ate his (chocolate) hat at the reception.
Please note that we have changed the announced date for Commerce Bank Bike Philly. The ride will be on Sunday, September 14, 2008.

Sustainable Transportation Fair and Forum. On Thursday, April 17th, the Bike Coalition will be at 30th Street Station participating with others in the area's first fair on sustainable transportation. Stop by to try out a SEPTA bus bike rack and see a SEPTA bus for the future and new hybrid cars. Sign up for Bike Freedom Valley and enter a raffle for a new Prius. At 6pm, a forum featuring Sam "Gridlock Sam" Schwartz and other urban and international transportation experts will be held at the Academy of Natural Sciences (RSVP to rwall@ansp.org).
May 16th is National Bike to Work Day. Bike into work and meet us for a reception at Philadelphia's City Hall with free coffee from 8:30-9:30am. Our annual commuter race between a transit user, a car driver (provided by PhillyCarShare) and a bicycle will be held on Tuesday, May 13. Other Bike Week activities planned include a Bike Film Night on Wednesday, May 14 at International House and Bike to the Ballpark on Thursday. Stay tuned for details.
Philadelphia Bike Map Wiki. Ever take a ride and find a dangerous intersection, a signal that is badly timed, a bike lane that suddenly disappears or a pot hole that for some reason still isn't fixed? John Boyle, BCGP's Advocacy Director, has created a wiki where you can map these problems. This map will be presented to the new bicycle/pedestrian coordinator in July. All you need is a gmail account. Find the map here.
Latest on South St. Bridge. The South Street Bridge Coalition has developed a report outlining a series of recommendations that would make the bridge safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. Read the report prepared by Wallace, Roberts and Todd (based on two community charrettes and with input from the Bicycle Coalition) and send an email and hardcopy letter to Mayor Nutter and others here. Read Inga Saffron's article here.
Stand up and be counted! Bicyclists are needed to show their support at three upcoming events: Philadelphia's Parks Funding Rally: Wednesday, April 16 at 12 noon at City Hall (Mayor Nutter is attending!). Scudder Falls Bridge: April 28th Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission meeting at 10:30am at The Inn at Lambertville Station -- voice your support for the bridge pathway. Bike Sharing in Philadelphia: April 30th 2 pm, City Council Hearing, 4th Floor of City Hall.
Blog Highlights Recent postings in the Philadelphia Bicycle Blog include (the lack of) bike parking at the new Comcast Center, how Washington National's bike parking policies should inspire the Phillies, State Farm's anti-bicycling ad fiasco, a video on urban cycling, and how Philadelphia's disaster plan forgot that some people use bicycles as their primary mode of transportation.
