Greetings!
One of the Bicycle Coalition's aims this year was to better communicate with you. Towards that end, we just launched an all-new bicyclecoalition.org.
I want to thank our staff, John, Breen, Beth, Jill and Sarah, who all spent a lot of time filling the site with information about our advocacy as well as practical information for bicyclists. Let me know what you think!
Alex Doty, Executive Director
P.S. -- We are limiting registrations for Commerce Bank Bike Philly to 5,000 riders this year so, if you haven't already registered, secure your place now!

ALL NEW BICYCLECOALITION.ORG
We teamed up with EvolveStrategies to develop a new Bicycle Coalition website to serve you better. It has information about how to take action, report a problem, find commuter routes, learn bicycling tips, upcoming events, and the latest on the Bicycle Coalition's advocacy efforts throughout the region. There are pages for each regional committee, and we encourage you to get involved in the committee where you live.

Remembering Gihon Jordan
After a long battle with cancer, Bicycle Coalition board member and retired Philadelphia Streets Department engineer Gihon Jordan passed away August 7th. One of the early board members of the Bicycle Coalition, Gihon was a fiery champion for bicyclist and pedestrian rights. A safer South Street Bridge being planned by the Nutter Administration is part of his legacy. Philadelphia is a better place today because of Gihon's passionate advocacy for safer streets for bikes and peds. Read more about his life and how to leave a remembrance. |

Philadelphia Bicycle News
Our blog, with new posts almost every day, is now a regular fixture on the pages of the new bicyclecoalition.org. This past month feature posts about the nearly completed West Bank Greenway, speeding and pedestrian crossings on the Fairmount Park Drives, the Ivy Ridge Trail, and how to bike to this weekend's Philadelphia Folk Festival. Sign up to receive a feed of the blog posts or for posts to come directly to your in box! |
Summer Streets in NYC
This is the summer of "cyclovia" -- closing streets to cars to encourage active recreation and excercise. First launched in Bogota, Columbia, the idea is sweeping American cities. Last Saturday, New York City launched Summer Streets -- closing 7 miles of streets in Manhattan on three Saturdays in August for walking, bicycling and running. Alex and John are leading a tour this coming Satuday, August 16 and you are invited! Sarah was there, with a video camera, last Saturday: enjoy it vicariously with video (courtesy of EvolveStrategies), photos and a blog post. We're excited to see how Philadelphia can capitalize on lessons learned from NYC's ventures. |

Bicycle Ambassadors
Bicycle Ambassador Breen Goodwin has been on the job two months and has already developed some test outreach materials and a new logo to reach out to new bicyclists and those teetering on the edge of two-wheeled freedom.
Look for Breen at the Clark Park Farmer's Market this Saturday morning.
