Dear Bicyclist,
When I come into the office these days, I am never sure what surprises await me. The education team may report on the latest campaign the Ambassadors thought up (see the Walnut Street bridge below) or the advocacy team may report on the excellent trail planning being done by the Chester County Planning Commission or buffered bike lanes being proposed for Market Street and JFK west of City Hall. But the best reports are of all the new members -- and Bike Philly riders -- who want to support the work of our talented staff and devoted volunteers. Would you do me a favor? Ask a friend to become a member. We've even teamed up with Nodding Head Brewery to reward your good deed (see New Member Happy Hour below). Ben Franklin Bridge Walkway Ramp in 2012! On June 16th, Matt Anastasi, Chair of BCGP's Ben Franklin Bridge Committee presented the findings of the report Crossing the Delaware for Transportation Independence to the Delaware River Port Authority Board of Commissioners. Anastasi asked the Board to commit funds in 2011 to begin the design of a new ramp for the South Walkway on the Camden side. DRPA's Chief Executive Officer responded here and here that he would find the funds to begin design so that the construction of the ramp could begin in 2012. Matt and the Bicycle Coalition's John Boyle deserve our heartfelt thanks for the years of advocacy that got this result!
Gray's Ferry Crescent featured at Complete the Schuylkill River Trail Walk 75 people came out for the June 19th Walk from Bartram's Garden to the new Gray's Ferry Crescent in South Philly. This free event was organized by BCGP and Complete the Trail Coalition. Bicycle Ambassadors The Bicycle Ambassadors launched a new campaign on the Walnut Street Bridge during the month of June. With signs raised and literature in hand, Ambassadors raise motorist awareness of their need to yield before crossing the painted blue bike lane for a right turn. Ambassadors are also taking the time to talk to sidewalk riders about switching over to riding on the road. For dates on this campaign and other outreach visit bikephl.org. If you would like the Bicycle Ambassadors to come to your next event please complete an Event Request Form.
