MLK Path Repairs
MLK Path Repairs

We're very pleased to report that another long-term priority of the Bicycle Coalition has been reached! Fairmount Park crews have begun to repair sections of the path, including hand trimming of tree roots, that endanger bicyclists. We thank Fairmount Park for tackling this problem and improving the path for commuters and recreational cyclists.
Bike Philly 2008
Dear Bicycle Coalition,

September was a fantastic month for bicycling! Watching over 3,000 bicyclists enjoying a morning of car-free bicycling at Commerce Bank Bike Philly was an inspiration that fuels my dreams of what a great bicycling city Philadelphia can be.

Taking some practical steps towards that dream, Mayor Nutter not only rode but also made two important announcements to the cheering crowd: 1,500 bike racks are going to be installed in Philadelphia shortly and the mayor, in partnership with William Penn Foundation and the Bicycle Coalition, will be commissioning a study to figure out how to bring bike sharing to Philadelphia.

A week after the ride, Mayor Nutter fulfilled an important campaign promise by hiring Charles Carmalt as Philadelphia's new Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator. Charley was kind enough to come meet with us on his second day on the job and we have high hopes for working with Charley to make more Philadelphia bicycling dreams come true.

With so much to celebrate it's time for a party! Please join me for Biketoberfest (details below).

Commerce Bank Bike Philly

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia proudly hosted the second annual Commerce Bank Bike Philly on Sunday, September 14th.  Over 3,100 bicyclists took over Philadelphia as we closed 20 miles of roads for cyclists.  It was a wonderful day, and the event was another huge success.

A special thank you to all our sponsors, riders and over 200 volunteers for making this event possible.

Big Win for South Street Bridge

A long-time priority of the Bicycle Coalition was achieved in mid-September.  The South Street Bridge Coalition (led by James Campell and Marcia Wilkoff and which the Bicycle Coalition joined) negotiated a landmark agreement with the Nutter Administration to improve many features, including a reduction in lanes, a crosswalk in front of the Schuylkill River Trail ramp, wider bike lanes and advanced bicycle stop bars. This is a big victory for urban sustainability and we applaud all involved. The details of the new design features are
here. The Streets Department expects the Bridge to be closed for repairs in early December.

parking day PARK(ing) DAY

Friday, September 18th, Philadelphia took part in National Park(ing) Day. Parking spaces throughout Philadelphia were transformed into small parks, public spaces, art exhibits and educational displays as over 30 groups participated in this global event.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia joined forces with Bike Share Philadelphia, Fuji Bikes, PhillyCarShare and the University of Pennsylvania to create a bike sharing demonstration. Two on-street parking spaces were transformed into bike sharing pods in Center City and University City.  The demonstration attracted 54 riders and averaged three trips per bike.
