2009 Accomplishments
Spruce and Pine bike lanes- the fulfillment of a campaign
promise Mayor Nutter made to the Bicycle Coalition - will be made permanent
when the streets are repaved in the spring Coordinated an application for $36 million of federal
stimulus funds to pay for four missing segments of the Schuylkill River Trail (plus
other trails in Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery,
Schuylkill and Camden
counties). Led the effort to get Philadelphia City Council to pass an
ordinance requiring new construction to install bicycle parking (Yay!) and
pushed back legislation requiring bicycle registration (Boo!) Talked to over 15,000 people, encouraging them to ride more
often and ride more safely, in the first season of the Bicycle Ambassadors. Produced our third annual TD Bank Bike Philly, with 3,000
people riding on car-free Philly streets. Helped secure federal stimulus funds for the construction of
the Chester Valley Trail -- and construction has already begun! Our Montgomery County Committee led the effort to improve
security on the Schuylkill River Trail in Norristown
after a bicyclist was assaulted. Our Bucks
County and South Jersey
Committees submitted a petition with 1,400 signatures urging the Delaware River
Joint Toll Bridge Commission to include a bicycle and pedestrian pathway on the
I-95 Scudder Falls Bridge. The Bicycle Coalition continues to act as the fiscal sponsor
and provide logistical support for the Delaware
state organization, Bike Delaware. - South Jersey committee won adoption of a Complete Streets Policy by New Jersey's Department of Transportation
Launched "Bike the Strike" campaign during SEPTA strike,
significantly increasing the number of bicycle commuters. The first phase of the Pennypack Trail opened in eastern Montgomery County -- part of a broader trail plan
designed by the county in collaboration with the Bicycle Coalition. Renew your Bicycle Coalition membership for 2010 in four minutes online!
