Dear (Contact First Name),
Over the years I've spoken to many of you for whom, like me, Bike Freedom Valley was your first organized bicycle ride. Whether it's your first Bike Freedom Valley or you have ridden all 28, please join me this Sunday for a great ride that celebrates the freedom you feel on two wheels and supports our work to make your ride better.

Biggest Bike Week Ever
Facing $4/gallon gas, the interest in Bike Week this year was intense and we organized an unprecedented number of events to bring home the message about how bicycling is the most enjoyable way to save money, your waistline and the planet. The hard work paid off and the Coalition got incredible coverage from radio, print and television.
We kicked off the week with a "commuter race" between a cyclist, transit rider and car, and of course, the bicylist--Pat Cunnane of Fuji Bikes--won the four mile race through morning traffic. Other highlights included the release of a Coalition report on Philadelphia's Bicycle Parking shortage (pdf); a film night to screen Breaking Away; a Bike to the Ballpark to see the Phillies cream the Braves; and a very wet but successful Bike to Work day with Mayor Nutter. He persevered through driving rain to lead over 60 bicyclists along MLK Drive and down the Parkway to City Hall. Photos of all of these events are here. Other events capping off the month were the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby and a well-attended Ride of Silence.

| Bicycle Ambassador Coordinator Hired!
After a long search, BCGP is proud to announce that Breen Goodwin, who recently relocated from Portland, Oregon, is the new Bicycle Ambassador Coordinator. Breen will get the program off the ground this summer, and hire additional ambassadors for a full launch in Spring 2009. The Bicycle Ambassador program is an on-street education program to inform bicyclists about rules of the road and bicycle safety and is modeled on a successful Chicago program.
Breen was a loan officer with Rose City Mortgage (a socially responsible mortgage company) and has a wealth of experience to bring to her new job. She started a Bike Commuting 101 class in Portland, which she brought to major corporations, was involved in npGreenway, a local advocacy group for multi-use trails, and on the planning committee of GreenDrinks, an international social networking group. |
