Dear (Contact First Name),

Another day, another call from a reporter writing a story about the increase in bicycle commuting. To help meet the rising demand for information about safe bicycling the Bicycle Coalition is launching a new web page.

There will be expanded sections on our county advocacy committees, an introduction to our new Bicycle Ambassador program and links to online maps. And there will be plenty of action alerts, like the petition for a bike pathway on the new Scudder Falls Bridge (see below).

Look for our new website on August 15th.

Alex Doty, Executive Director

P.S. -- We are limiting registrations for Commerce Bank Bike Philly to 5,000 riders this year so, if you haven't already registered, secure your place now!

Scudder Falls Petition Drive
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission is slated to renovate the I-95 Scudder Falls Bridge over the Delaware River between Bucks and Mercer counties.  Advocates have been pressing the Commission to include a pedestrian and bicycle pathway into the bridge's design and last year sent in 500 postcards. Unfortunately, the Commission remains unconvinced and has not committed to the path's inclusion citing cost concerns.  We are looking to gather 2000 signatures on this petition and have so far collected over 600.  If you haven't already done so, please sign the petition and send the link to your friends.  Every signature helps!

Declare Your Independence!
Ride of Silence
The Bicycle Coalition, along with other big-city bicycle advocacy groups launched the Gas-Free Fridays Campaign the week prior to July 4th.   Spurred by soaring gas prices and our country's overdependence on oil, we joined our fellow bicycle advocates to urge Americans to show their patriotism on July 4th, on what we called "Independence from Oil Day", and all Fridays going foward by pledging to make more gas-free trips. The "Gas-Free Fridays" campaign aims to get more Americans on bicycles this summer, recognizing that half of all driving trips are under two miles in length.

Thank you John Wood
We salute Montgomery Open Space Planner John Wood,, who retired in June. He is responsible for the extensive Montgomery County Trail system that has expanded to over 70 miles and has become a national model for trail development.  Now, he'll have more time for his other passion, painting.
